Fear Is Good for Running from Tigers

Your mind shuts down. Blood pumps through your systems. You strategize for protecting the absolute essentials. Firey patterns of rage and determination dance across your mind.

By throwing all your resources into the essentials, fear accesses a focused power. It can blow through whatever stands in your way.  Suddenly your mind is  unencumbered by all the crap that usually worries you. You feel powerful.

As we are slowly realizing though, fear is terrible for growing a garden, raising a child, and living a good life.

Growing and developing things of value requires faith, hope, and a vision for the future. It requires investing a lot of precious resources in something with no guarantee of return. It requires constant attention over many many years.

Fear will wear out too soon. You can run from tigers out of fear, but not run a marathon across an entire continent four times. You would collapse twitching.

Fear is there to focus you on the essentials, but growing things require going beyond the essentials constantly. You can make something live by focusing on survival essentials, but you can’t make it live well.

Fear is there to help fight or flee terrible things, but it cannot make good things.

That is not the job of fear.

That is what love is for.

      Aww thank you Liz! That makes me feel all happy. I was a little worried about the titles being too… bizarre for your average bear. But I suppose average bears don’t read personal development blogs (they mostly eat berries and live in the woods).

    About fear, I plan to write a post on my personal blog about noradrenaline and cortisol, which do exactly what you describe and are indeed good to flee from predators.
